Project: Art & Market The project we are working on as a part of SAP2009 is currently under a working title "Art & Market". It consists of several stages, layers if you like, most important being two public forums and the publication. Trough the course of the time spent at the residency we are conducting a research on two related topics: "Artist Contracts & Artists Rights" and "Gentrification & Public Art". As the outcome of the research we write a seminar which is used as basis for public forums. We use both the texts and forum documentation, as well as materials relevant to the topics for the publication we are working on. We are interested in the social and institutional networks and relations that determine and contain art. In this given work we are specifically interested in the relationships between art and the capital; which role does art occupy in the "market" and how or rather whether "artistic values" can be transferable into monetary values. We want to question art's ability to act as a political agent rather then engage in the processes of generating capital. Focusing on public art we want to discuss its' ways of conveying meaning. It is our belief that the change of physical space/location; moving from a gallery (art space) to the outdoor location (public space) doesn't make art more understandable to the general public, nor it affects its' political potential necessarily. By organizing public forums and creating a publication, as well as conducting research, we are using the institutional frame of artist residency i.e. gallery space, as a tool for generating and acquiring knowledge about the relations of capital and arts, processes of gentrification as well as histories of Seoksu market and public arts of Anyang/Korea. By doing this we hope we are playing a role (a small one but nevertheless) in these processes by disseminating ideas we value within the scope of these issues, and also learning more about the place that is our temporary location. The project we are realizing here is a part of a larger work in progress we plan to further after the residency, each time infused with the specifics of the location/context it is to be produced within.

프로젝트: 아트 & 마켓

SAP2009 석수아트프로젝트의 일환으로 현재 우리는 “아트 & 마켓 Art & Market”이라는 제목의 프로젝트를 진행하고 있다. 이 프로젝트는 몇 단계로 구성되어 있는데, 가장 중요한 부분은 두 번의 공개 포럼의 개최와 출판물 제작이다. 레지던스 기간 동안 우리는 두 개의 연관된 주제, 즉 “예술 계약 & 예술가의 권리 Art Contracts & Artists Rights”와 “젠트리피케이션과 공공미술 Gentrification & Public Art”에 관한 리서치를 진행했다. 이 리서치의 결과를 우리는 텍스트로 정리하여 공개 포럼의 기초자료로 사용하고, 이 텍스트와 공개 포럼의 기록 그리고 연구 주제와 관련된 자료들을 모아 출판물로 제작할 것이다.
우리는 예술을 정의 내리고 둘러싸고 있는 사회적, 제도적 네트워크와 관계들에 관심을 가지고 있다. 이번 프로젝트에서 우리는 특히 예술과 자본 사이의 관계에 중점을 두었다. 즉, 예술이 ‘시장 market’에서 차지하는 역할이나 ‘예술적 가치’가 금전적 가치로 전환되는 것이 어떻게 가능한 지에 대해 관심을 갖는다. 우리는 자본 생성의 과정에 관여하는 것 보다 정치적인 에이전트로서 역할 하는 예술의 가능성에 대해 질문하고자 한다. 또한 공공미술에 포커스를 두면서 이런 미술이 의미를 전달하는 방법에 대해 논의하고자 한다. 갤러리(예술 공간 art space)에서 야외 공간(공공 장소 public space)으로 이동하는 물리적인 공간과 장소의 변화 자체가 일반 대중에게 예술을 이해하기 더 쉽게 하거나 예술의 정치적인 가능성에 필연적으로 영향을 미치는 것은 아니라고 생각한다.
공개 포럼을 개최하고 출판물을 제작하거나 리서치를 수행하면서 우리는 아티스트 레시던시 즉, 갤러리 스페이스라는 제도적 프레임을 사용하는데, 이것은 예술과 자본의 관계, 젠트리피케이션 Gentrification의 과정 그리고 석수시장의 역사와 안양/한국의 공공미술에 대한 지식을 생성하고 습득하기 위한 도구로써 사용된다. 이를 통해 이런 주제의 범위 내에서 가치 있는 아이디어를 전파하고 우리가 임시로 거주하고 있는 이 공간에 대해 배우는 과정 속에서 (미약함에도 불구하고) 작은 역할을 하고자 희망한다.
우리가 여기서 실천한 프로젝트는 레지던시 이후에도 계속해서 진행될 큰 규모의 과정형 작업의 일부분이고, 작업이 진행될 때마다 매 장소/컨텍스트의 특수한 상황들이 작업에 주입된다.
