Collecting Towards a Paper Museum in Anyang

The historical significance of Anyang River is one that is hard to gauge with observation alone. Its current landscape is the result of successful environmental restoration with abundant wildlife, un-kept grassy banks and a cycle/pedestrian lane that provides a variety of recreational use for nearby residents. In its recent history, Anyang River played a complex role in Korea's industrial modernisation. In constant to the current idyllic image the river was once nicknamed Korea's dirtiest sewage the ecosystem was devastarted and the stream and hanks undesirable for recreational use. Many birds and fish one sees oday had been absent for around 30years.

Jinsoo Kwon

Seoksu Entertainment Project

Jinsoo Kwon's project, which is about searching for simple, everyday beauties, can be divided into two parts. The first part consists of inscribing the scenarization of the everyday memories one acquires from passing through Anyang and Seoksu Market in 2D format. The second part is the Seoksu Entertainment Project which entails finding playful playful pleasures in Seoksu Market with students Lee Un-nuri and 13 other students from the local middle school.

In August, the Seoksu Entertainment project took time to interact with the market people through interviews and market surveys. In September, a photo project recording people laughing at performances was launched to enhance communication between the students and the people of the market. To fill the market place with laughter and to strengthen the many relationships created through laugher, students visited the market to engage the people there through performance, and embraces. The students also concentrated on walking around the small sweet shops, snack shops, barbershops, fish stalls, and other shops in the market to discover what can be done to make the place better, and to make sketches, drawing, and figures. Beginning in October, Jinsoo Kwon installed and showed the images of hidden beauty found in Anyang, and the results of the entertainment project were also exhibited as aprt of the open studio.

Living Slowly : Message and Tea Performance

During the Seoksu Art Project opening festival a "Healthy Arts" event was held in Man-An Bridge. To us, leisure means living slowly and stopping for a moment for rest from time to time. The festival intended to let the visitors experience "living slowly" through a massage performance and tea drinking event. Art is for spiritual well-being and massage and drinking tea are for bodily well-being, If the people who participated in the festival feet even a moment of happiness, the we can feel that the purpose of this event has been fulfilled.

Anyang Gate

In Buddhist culture, the door that connects the secular world and sacred interior is called . The name originates from the phrase : "If I am reincarnated, I want to ve born in Anyang again." All Buddhist temples have Anyang Gates. They all have different appearances but they all strive to show what happiness is. I will design and install my own Anyang Gate in my studio.

Reviving Anyang River

To capture all the diverse images of Anyang River that changes it appearance at different times of day, I went into the same water of my childhood 30 years ago to revisit memories of those times. The plants growing wild around the river are so easy to pass by without noticing and these experiences come to me as fresh surprises.

Getting a Job

I thought working at the market was sure going to be different from working anywhere else, because there were the people involve in your daily routine. So in order to create rather intimate relationships with the merchants, I started working at the market without getting paid. To them, day's work was their life that day. And so, working with them was like looking into their lives.

Reason for Planting and taking care of vegetables

I planted a vegetable. Not to send but full grown vegetable. I know since it' already full grown, if I planted, it was soon to die. But I took a good care of it. I would keep a steady temperature and provide heat rays. The vegetable represents the traditional market. It is sad that because of big discount stores and the flood of western culture, the traditional market place is losing its ground. And we cannot predict how far it is going to make. But we do not want to neglect it. We take care of it, nurture it in the form of art.

Placement

My works are sometimes created to become materials for my next projects.
The project I am working on in Seoksu consists of making a few drawings of the scenery, transforming the drawings into a motion picture, and, lastly, printing the images of the motion picture onto paper films and installing a self-made reflective projector.
I plan on using a thrown-away ceiling fan to make the projector. I will utilize the transverse constant 180 degree-rotation (the movement that scatters the wind to all directions as the fan's head rotates)and make the projector scatter the image horizontally.

The road signs and gigantic building structures that I see when I drive from Seoul to Anyang, the layouts of Anyang River ask me if I am ready to adapt to this place : "Will I become a part of this scenery?" I might have asked this of myself when I was standing on a high ground with a wide view where many objects can be seen simultaneously. I felt this when, after becoming familiar withe the scene, all the parts of the scenery assembled to become on in my head. I might also have through this project my perception of the scenery and the process through which this perception came to exist.

Paprika Project

Paprika Project is a project looking into Korean society from biological and genetic engineering perspectives by dealing with foods which people consume daily and therefore make up our body. This project is exhibited through 'Yellow Store', a fruit and vegetable store in Dae-in Market, one of traditional markets in Kwangju, during Kwangju biennale. Along with 'Yellow Store', 'Red Store' selling Carotinoid in.
Seoksu market in Anyang and 'Green store' selling Chlorophyll Paprika in Sagang market in Hwaseong will be open as a part of this project as well. In each store, People can buy yellow fruits and vegetables only in 'Yellow Store', red ones only in 'Red store', and green ones only in 'Green Store' respectively.

Paprika Project is interested in the development of biologycal and genetic engineering technology which brings new colors to fruits and vegetables. Nowadays Genetically modified organism(GMO) is appealing as one of effective solutions to overpopulation and thereby shortage of food in developing and underdeveloped countries. However, it also affects our body which is built up by consuming these modified foods from 'modified' nature. This project raises issues of applying nature colors to foods genetically and understanding how genetically applied nature colors affect our body.

To R

It is not important to us who went where. However, I do think about R from time to time. I wonder : where did he go? How is he? Where is he? I must meet a person who is also an acquaintance of R in Anyang. I will ask him about R.

Animal Tower

The project "Animal Tower" originates from the observation of the contrast between traditional and modern forms of commerce in South Korea. Taking the commercial activity of Seoksu Market as the main focus, our project encourages a reflection about the current transformation in the structures of commerce, not only in Anyang, but also in Seoul and other big cities.
"Animal Tower" is an iron structure containing cages with four groups of animals purchased in Seoksu Market, separated in in different floors. Each of these groups get ted only withe the leftover food that falls down from the floor above. This happens through holes in the bottom of each floor, which progressively get smaller moving from the top level to the bottom.

Korean sleepers

"Korean sleepers" is a collection of photos of people sleeping in the subway, on their way from central Seoul to Anyang. After a day of work, people usually take the subway to some city in the periphery and come back home exhausted, we can find this in many countries around the world, but maybe in korea it became even more clear to us than in any other city we have visited before, as people just get asleep on the train.

Poem Tree

I remind myself of cafe 'Lizard', where we spend many hours from August to October, 2008. Also SAP main office, the workroom, and all the artists who participated in SAP. The memories of working together will soon fade as time goes by, but they will remain-intact as long as I can remember.
Many thanks to 'hairy' Seokyoung Kim, who showed kindness when I could not quite mingle with SAP people. Lovely Yujin, I could not get a chance to talk with you much, but we said we would have a drink again. Hope you don't forget.
And I also express my gratitude to our sweet writer, Hyungsoon Jang and Jinsoo Kwon. I will not forget Sputnik 1, Song and Boram's laughs, poet Kyung-ae Hwang, forest expert Lee sun im, and the kind support from Pres. Park and his family.
Langen Hans, poet and wirter from Germany, thank you for being awed by my Poem Tree. And I also well remember Ms. Jayeon Kwon's unlikely great power. Those little moments are as vivid as the colorful handkerchief's coming out of a magician's hat.
All the participating artists!
I hope you find own art and make the best of it. My best wishes go to all of you!

Signs with firm ideas of their purposes can be seen in between buildings. They all say: “This place is such and such. Welcome, if this place suits your purposes”. In other words, they are intended to inform the viewers what a place is about. A sign for “Young-Bin Gwan” in bright red letters that can be spotted even from afar. This sign also tells you that ”This is a Chinese Restaurant. If you want some Chinese food, please come in and enjoy”. However, the space represented by this sign is empty. The Young-Bin Gwan sign had lost its purpose. We want to concentrate on the signs that had lost their purposes. Moreover, I wish to create new meanings to the signs or erase the traces of lost purposes they still retain.

Kimchi, Makgeolli(rice wine), and Jeotgal(salted fish)

My passion for food brought me here to Korea for SAP's three month residency program. During my time here I have immersed myself in Korean cuisine. I have shopped in traditional markets and modern department store groceries. I have eaten simple and elaborate meals in restaurants and homes. I am compiling a field guide of Korean ingredients from the photographs I have taken during my time here. This pictorial guide will be published as an interactive website called "Taste and Touch". Visitors are invited to help me flesh out the website by identifying ingredients and providing recipes. During open studios I will organize a seminar on the nature of fermented food in Korea. The center point of the discussion will be a tasting(similar to a wine tasting) of fermented foods such as Kimchi, Makgeolli, and Jeotgal. The seminar participants will discuss the finer points of how will fermentation makes Korean food unique. The event will be videotaped. The seminar size is extremely limited reservations are encouraged.

Relaxing singing the song of new village

When I visited Seoksu Market in summer, it looked as if time had stopped. There were almost no people walking by. The few shops were closed or empty. The shop keepers were in their shops hiding from the sun rather than outside waiting for customers. They could be seen watching TV or yawning behind the displays of goods.
The general stagnation in old market places is caused by the changes inresidential areas caused by the development of more convenient housing transportation, the consequent weakening of the identity we derive from our place of domicile, and loosening family ties. The residents of nearby apartments all dream of moving to Seoul for a better job or for a better education for their children. Therefore, they do not prefer going to market places where the shopper and vendor must establish a relationship in addition to a stronger sense of community shared between Anyang residents and shop keepers. Rather than going to a small shop in the market place and trying to interact with unfriendly clerks to buy goods, people from outside, choose to go to supermarkets where there is no psychological pressure. In supermarkets you choose what to buy by comparing the qualities of many products and you can walk out empty handed if their goods do not satisfy your needs.
Although there is no clear explanation for why the clerks I saw in the market place yawned, I know that yawning is a natural reaction to sleepiness and boredom. Also, yawning is an infectious reaction. You yawn not only when you see a person yawning but also when you hear someone yawning, as I discovered in my performance '10 times yawning,' which was a part of a radio art project called BEAMLAP held in 2005. However, there is a theory that suggests that yawning is a mechanism with a strong reviving effect which, by providing fresh oxygen, awakens the brain. In my case, I automatically stretch and yawn whenever I feel extreme anxiety or need to relax. The fact that an athlete yawns before he starts and people unconsciously yawn right before having sex also supports the theory.
The yawn of the clerk lady I saw might also be a mark of a new beginning. It can also be a very powerful resistance that leaves loud opponents powerless and communicates to them; "I have no interest in you." The project collects various yawns from Seoksu Market and shows the audiences the meanings of these yawns. Moreover, this project strives to create a relationship between the works and the audiences through audiences' reactions to the exhibited reproduction of yawning
