Lecture : Making Horong and floating Yudeung

Korean traditional lanterns, made with Korean paper, fascinate me. The Korean paper which surrounds a light bulb transmits colors and brightness so that the Korean traditional lantern makes different colors and brightness. Sometimes, I look at the lights, and I hear them tell me that I should show enthusiasm and what I think or what I have inside of me. Korean traditional lamps make colors and light up the world dimly, not like the regular straight lights, which hurt the people's eyes.
For the Seoksu Art Project 2009, I will lecture how to make Korean traditional lanterns. During the war and Japanese colonialism, we lost many of our traditional lanterns again. Our ancestors used to put their wishes into the lanterns. for instance, if they wanted to have a bay, they made lanterns look like fertility symbols such as watermelons, garlic, or pomegranates. the made a carp lamp if they wanted to be successful with their careers, and turtle lamps for a long life. Now, I wish this brilliant tradition of making lanterns be shared by everyone, not just a few Korean people, but the world. I wish that everyone will enjoy this tradition which belongs in our daily culture again.
