Documenting Change and Communication


Overlapping urban planning, architecture, history and sociology with visual art, my work involves exploration and documentation, bringing attention to otherwise overlooked aspects of our surroundings. Context is crucial to my work, as it moves between traditional gallery/museum settings and other public spaces. Through my work, I attempt to engage the viewer/participant and to enable art to have greater relevance in daily life.


Documenting Change
I am exploring and observing the shifting dynamic of Seoksu Market, a place in transition, through photographic documentation of small changes i the physical environment that accumulate over time to change the overall feel of the place. A new sign or renovated storefront may go unnoticed, but hundreds of minor changes over the course of years shape a new and different place.


Communication
A major focus for me while in Korea is communication. Not speaking Korean, interacting with people is a challenge, anything from purchasing something to ordering a meal or discussing art often proves to be a difficult task. I smile a lot and say "An-nyoung-ha-se-yo" twenty times a day to the same people in the market, since I don't have any other words to say in Korean. Other times I rely on hand gestures rether inaccurate computer translation programs, and mind reading.

People Make a Place
In collaboration with Sun-ae Kim(a native of Anyang), we are creating a video portrait of Seoksu Market, exploring the human dynamic of the market through interviews with the significant characters of our daily lives while in the Seoksu Market Project.




벽화의 기록, 그리고 소통
미술과 도시계획, 건축, 역사, 사회학의 접점에서 시작되는 나의 작업은 담사와 기록, 주변 환경에서 간과되기 쉬운 지점에 주의를 기울이는 과정을 통해 이루어진다. 전통적인 미술전시장과 공공장소를 오가는 나의 작업에서 장소의 맥락은 결정적인 역할을 한다. 나는 작업을 통해 관객과 참여자를 끌어들이고 미술에 좀 더 큰 일상적 의미를 부여하고자 한다. 


벽화를 기록하기
나의 변화 중에 있는 석수장의 과도기적 동태를 관찰하고 사진으로 기록한다. 사진은 물리적 공간 안에서의 작은 변화를 담는데 시간이 축적되면서 이 작은 변화는 특정장소의 분위기 전체를 변화시킨다. 새로 세워진 간판이나 개조한 가게 입구 자체는 크게 눈에 띄지 않으나, 수 년에 걸친 작은 변화들이 수업이 쌇여 전혀 다른 공간이 새롭게 만들어진다. 


의사소통
한국에 있는 동안 내게 가장 신경이 쓰였던 것은 바로 의사소통이다. 한국말을 하지 못하는 나에게 사람들과의 교류는 일종의 도전이 된다. 물건을 사거나 식사를 주문하는 것, 또는 미술에 대한 토론이 종종 어려운 과제가 되어버린다. 나는 끊임없이 미소를 짓고 있으며, 시장에서 만나는 사람에게 하루에도 20번씩 "안녕하세요"라고 말한다. 이 말밖에 한국말로는 할 수 없기 때문이다. 때로는 손짓과 몸짓, 컴퓨터 프로그램으로 만든 상당히 부정확한 번역문, 그리고 독심술(ESP)에 의존하기도 한다.

공간을 이루는 사람들
나는 안양 출신 작가인 김선애와 협업으로 석수시장의 비디오 초상을 만들고 있다. 비디오는 석수시장 국제 레지던시 기간동안 우리가 매일 마주치는 사람들 중 인상 깊은 인물을 인터뷰하여 시장의 인간적 측면을 생생히 담아낸다.
