Songs for Seoksu Market


It would not be easy to observe an object with someone else's view, go through researches and analyses, and then get an insight that means something to myself. 
To me, Seoksu market is chaotic place, probably because of a certain force of the space that keeps the time and the visual images that fill such space despite the space that despite the reality where the once prosperous traditional markers are deteriorated due to the modern commercial distribution system. It seems like that force is sinking me into entertaining event. I feel nothing but happiness as I leave after three months of residency and I would like to leave "a song" for those who will remain.


Music Album
I will visit the stores in Seoksu Market to meet the retailers and request them to sing their favorite songs they enjoy singing in their daily lives without any music sheet or accompaniment. And I record their singing. Expectedly, their as it is. The result will be produced in CD or DVD depending on the quantity.


Document
After recording each retailer's singing, I will ask the story behind the songs the sung and record them. Such record is not for exhibitions, but for research to understand how my emotion coincides with their story after listening to them singing. Finally, I will take a digital photo of the person who sang the song.


Drawing 
Concept drawing or image drawing on this work, I could not possibly expect that this work can be an art. Producing this album is not for the people who are armed with artistic theories but for those who stay "here and now" in Seoksu Market. In other words, in the songs they sang for themselves, I will remain in the image of "a certain artist" and this image will be sinking into the numerous other images of Seoksu Market.




석수시장을 위한 노래
타자로서 어떤 대상을 바라보고 리서치와 분석을 거쳐 그것이 나에게 주는 어떠한 통찰력을 얻어내기란 만만치 않은 일일 것이다. 석수시장이란 곳은 나에게 굉장히 어수선한 공간이다. 그것은 현대의 상업적 유통방식에 의하여 번창했던 재래시장이 서서히 쇠퇴해가는 현실과 상관없이 그동안의 세월을 고스란히 담은 공간과 그 공간을 가득 채운 시각 이미지들의 어떤 힘 때문인 듯하다. 그 힘에 의하여 나 역시 석수시장의 이미지들 속에 묻혀가는 듯하다. 그것은 슬프면서도(그 슬픔이 어디에서 오는지 정확히 알 수는 없지만) 즐기기에 충분한 사건이다.
나는 3개월의 레지던시를 마치고 떠나는 것에 그저 기쁘며, 곧 떠날 내가 남은 이들을 위해 '어떤 노래'를 남기려 한다.


뮤직앨범
석수시장 상점들을 방문하여 상인들을 만나 그들의 삶 속에서 그들이 즐겨부르는 애창곡을 어떠한 반주나 악보없이 자신의 입을 통해 불러줄 것을 부탁한다. 그리고 나는 그것을 녹음한다. 예상컨대 그 노래들은 가사나 음이 정확하지 않을 수도 있으며, 또한 온전하게 끝을 맺지 못할 수도 있다. 그 상태를 고스란히 녹음하는 것이 목표이다. 결과물은 그 자료의 분량에 따라 CD나 DVD로 제작된다. 


도큐멘트
상인들마다 노래 녹음이 끝나면 자신이 부른 노래에 대한 사연을 묻고 그것을 기록한다. 이 기록은 전시를 위한 용도가 아니라 상인들의 노래를 듣고 난 후의 나의 감정과 어떻게 맞닿아 있는지를 알기 위한 리서치이다. 마지막으로 노래를 부른 사람의 모습을 디지털 사진으로 남긴다.


드로잉
이 작업에 대한 컨셉 드로잉 혹은 이미지 드로잉.
나는 이 작업이 예술이 될 수 있을지 가늠할 수 없다. 이 앨범제작 작업은 예술이론으로 무장된 이들이 아닌, 석수시장 '바로 여기(here and now)'에 머무르고 있는 이들을 위한 노래이다. 즉, 그들이 그들 자신을 위해 불렀던 노래 속에 나는 '어떤 작가'의 이미지로 있을 것이며, 그 이미지는 이 석수시장의 무수한 이미지들 속에 다시 묻힐 것이다.
