Museum of Common History of The People of Manan-gu 일상의 역사 박물관: 만안구 사람들

The work I am making is concerned with concepts of the past and present, how memories and time are experienced through the photographic images and how people’s environment changes through modern development. The work will explore these concepts using private family albums and images from the past. The photographs are collected by approaching local people, talking with them and inviting them to be involved with the project by donating images from their family albums. The process of gaining access to these images will allow us to explore and to understand how this particular land has been changed over recent history and how the people have adapted to the new conditions.

History is a complex construction with its many layers being contributed to by the work of various interested groups. Obviously there are dangers that potential layers are neglected and go unrepresented. With my project I wish to stimulate public awareness of the potential to independently develop their city's history. This project focuses on making a museum that displays simple objects such as local people`s own photography. Everybody has a different and unique life, too valuable to just disappear and become traceless. After my residency’s over, I hope this project still continues and maybe someday Manan-gu will have a independently managed history museum driven by the civil society of Manan-gu district community.


내가 제작하고 있는 작업은 과거와 현재의 개념과 관련 되어 있고, 사진 이미지를 통해 어떻게 기억과 시간이 경험되고, 어떻게 사람들의 환경이 현대적 개발을 통해 변화해왔는지에 대한 것이다. 나의 작업은 이러한 개념을 사적인 가족 앨범과 과거로부터의 이미지를 사용하여 연구할 것이다. 이 사진들은 만안구 지역 사람들에게 다가가 그들과 대화하고, 그들의 가족 앨범 사진을 나의 프로젝트에 사용할 수 있도록 초대하는 과정을 통해 수집되었다. 이 이미지들에 접근하는 과정은 우리에게 이 특별한 지역이 어떻게 시간을 거쳐 변화되어 왔는지 그리고 변화된 새로운 상황에 어떻게 사람들이 적응해왔는지를 탐구하고 이해하도록 할 것이다.

역사는 다양한 이해집단들의 활동에 의해 구성된 수많은 층위를 가진 복잡한 구조물이다. 따라서 분명히 역사의 잠재적인 층위가 도외시되거나 표현되지 않는 위험이 존재한다. 나의 프로젝트를 통해 사람들이 자기 도시의 역사를 독립적으로 발전시킬 수 있다는 가능성에 대한 공공적 인식을 일깨우고 싶다. 모든 사람들은 저마다의 독특한 삶을 살고 있으며, 이것은 흔적 없이 사라지기에 너무나 소중하다. 나의 레지던시가 끝난 후에도 나는 이 프로젝트가 지속되길 바라고, 아마도 언젠가 만안구는 만안구 공동체의 시민사회에 의해 독자적으로 운영되는 역사 박물관을 갖게 될 것이다.
