A map to potential holes – ManAn Street Golf Course

We have created an alternative golf course in the streets of ManAn-gu incorporating found architecture, like small bumps, pipes and curves that serve as hazards on the nine-hole route that is connected by a walk through the neighborhood. With small interventions, minor repairs and marking of the locations, we turn negative space such as dispensable gaps into something new. Guided by a map, people can discover and rediscover their surroundings.

The ManAn old town is an endangered form of city design in Korea. It has been built in a flexible way based on the needs of people and has formed itself in a slow process over a period of time. In contrast, the new development zone is planned based on rigorous norms and the usage of space is prescribed in very definite ways, so that there is hardly any space left for people's personal ideas.

The concept of a street golf course unfolds the potential of an adaptive city. We declare ready-mades as art through demarcating them and assisting them to redefine their function. The usage of the work can lead to interesting interactions between the environment and the local people. Through these interventions we aim to inspire people to co-develop their own surroundings in an independent way.

The route begins at the Seoksu Market, where the players get a club, a ball, a map and a score card and start the street golf course through Manan-gu. After the Open Studio period, September 3rd to September 12th 2010, the golf course will stay open and will be taken care by neighborhood hosts.


A map to potential holes – 만안 길거리 골프

우리는 만안구 거리에서 발견된 작은 턱과 파이프, 커프 등과 같은 건축적 요소를 결합하여 아홉 개의 홀로 구성된 하나의 대안적 골프장을 만들었다. 아홉 개의 홀은 인근을 산책하면서 연결되고, 결합된 건축적 요소들은 루트의 장애물과 같은 역할을 한다. 작은 개입(intervention)과 약간의 수리 그리고 위치 표시를 통해 우리는 불필요한 틈새와 같은 부정된 공간 (negative space)을 새로운 어떤 것으로 변화시켰다. 지도의 안내를 따라 사람들은 그들의 주변을 발견 그리고 재발견하게 된다.

만안의 구 도시는 한국 도시 디자인의 위태로운 형태를 띠고 있다. 이곳은 사람들의 필요에 따라 유기적인 방식으로 건설되었고, 일정 기간 동안 느린 과정을 거쳐 스스로 형태를 갖춰왔다. 반면, 재개발 지역은 엄격한 기준에 의해 계획되고, 공간의 활용은 매우 정확하게 사전에 규정된다. 따라서 재개발지역에는 사람들의 개인적인 생각이 개입될 수 있는 공간의 여지가 없다.

길거리 골프장의 개념은 조정과 적응이 가능한 하나의 도시의 잠재적 가능성을 열어 보인다. 우리는 경계의 재설정과 기능의 재정립을 통해 레디메이드(ready-mades)를 예술로 전하고자 한다. 작품의 활용은 환경과 지역주민들 간의 흥미로운 상호작용을 이끌어낼 수 있다. 이러한 개입(intervention)을 통해 우리는 사람들에게 자신의 주변환경을 독자적으로 함께 개발할 수 있도록 영감을 주고자 한다. 골프장 루트는 석수시장에서 시작되고, 이곳에서 선수들은 골프채, 공, 지도 그리고 득점표를 받은 후, 만안구 일대의 거리에 위치한 골프 코스로 출발한다. 2010년 9월 3일부터 12일까지 진행되는 오픈 스튜디오 기간 이후, 이 골프 코스는 계속 개방될 것이며 이웃 주민들에 의해 관리될 예정이다.
